EXT. CHAMPION HILL’S BATTLEFIELD, MS – 1863 DAY
The sun shines beautifully in the blue, cloudy sky. An
uproarious KABOOM, KABOOM! of CANON FIRE and CRACKLE! of GUNFIRE. Dark smoke rises, hindering the sunlight.
We see UNION and CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS in the middle of a huge
battlefield, firing at each other. GUNSHOTS and SCREAMS of dying, agonized MEN in great pain fill the space. As bullets
fly through the air, their bodies fall to the bloody ground.
A LOCATION and DATE appears:
CHAMPION HILL MISSISSIPPI – 1863
PAUL GRAHAM, handsome, 30-year-old Union soldier, runs
through the active battlefield. A CONFEDERATE SOLDIER blocks his path, pointing a gun at him.
Why are you running? Are you afraid to fight boy?
I am not afraid to fight.
The Confederate soldier fires his gun, but Paul moves out of
the way, quickly pulls out his knife, and stabs the
Confederate soldier in the side. The soldier falls to the
ground and slowly bleeds out with fear in his eyes. Paul
steps over his lifeless body and walks away.
I hope you burn in hell.
Paul walks away to return to the battle, using his gun and
knife to fight off additional Confederates. As he continues
to fight valiantly, he darts his eyes around, searching the
crowd of faces, as if looking for someone.
Daniel, where are you?
Paul continues to fight and search, till a UNION SOLDIER on the ground reaches out and calls for him.
Paul hurriedly walks the Union soldier out of the line of
fire. KABOOM! and CRACKLE continue to echo around them. The Union soldier falls to the ground. Paul leans toward him and notices his battle wounds bleeding profusely.
We need to get you some help.
It’s too late for that, my friend.
Please…give this to…to m-my family…
The Union soldier hands Paul a chain that holds a locket.
I will make sure they get it, but you.
The Union soldier dies, and Paul stands and looks down at him somberly.
Rest in peace, my friend.
Paul holds the locket up to look at it for a second, dangling it in front of his face, then begins to tuck the necklace into his pocket. Suddenly, ELEANOR appears next to him, dressed in a big, Southern belle dress, with layers of ruffles, and there are steampunk goggles on her head.
Excuse me, sir…
What is it, miss?
With that, Eleanor snatches the necklace out of Paul’s hand.
Hey! Come back here.
Paul turns as she runs away and disappears without a trace.
Paul turns around and spots a 12-year-old drummer, his
brother, DANIEL GRAHAM, trying to avoid the line of fire.
Paul notices a man, DEREK, who is not in uniform, approaching Daniel from just a few feet away, wearing an evil smirk on his face.
Run to me now, Daniel! Hurry!
Daniel tries to run but is stopped by Derek, who roughly grabs him by the arm.
You’re not goin’ anywhere, kid.
Where’s your brother?
