The Bermuda “Recoil” #3

PAUL (CONT’D)
(sighing and rolling eyes)
C’mon! Really?

While Paul continues to fight, Derek maintains his harsh grasp on Daniel. Rose circles him, ready to attack him,
leveling her gun in his direction.

ROSE
You will never win, Derek, because
you let your anger control you. As
I said, you are pathetic.

Rose steps closer and hits Derek, allowing Daniel to finally break free. Daniel scurries away and disappears into the battle.

DEREK
You can run, boy, but I will find
you!

Daniel runs over to Paul and greets him with a hug.

PAUL
Thank God. Come on. Let’s get you
somewhere safe.

Paul pulls Daniel off the battlefield, and the brothers duck behind a broken log. Paul stares at the raging battle as he holds tightly on to his brother.

DANIEL
We have to return the battle, Paul.
We can’t just sit here hiding while
they’re fighting. They need us.

PAUL
That isn’t a battle, little
brother. It’s…a massacre.

DANIEL
Paul, look!

Daniel points at two Union soldiers escorting a female to a nearby house.

PAUL
What?

Paul looks in that direction and sees one of the soldiers pulling Eleanor by the hand, leading her into the old
farmhouse. The other soldier looks around outside, then closes the door.

The Bermuda “Recoil” #2

Paul tries to rescue Daniel, but he is sidetracked by another band of Confederate soldiers who get in his way, and he must stop to fight them off.

PAUL
Get out of my way!

Meanwhile, ROSE, a Native American woman in a Union soldier’s uniform bravely hurries over to block Derek’s path. She has many weapons strapped to her body and looks like a warrior
herself.

ROSE
Derek, I had no idea you have taken
a liking to kidnapping children, you fiend. Let the boy go.

DEREK
Hello, Rose. It’s nice to see you
again.

DANIEL
Let me go, mister! Please!

Daniel struggles, trying to get away from Derek, but the boyish blows have no effect on the brutish man.

DEREK
I most certainly will not!

ROSE
The Bermuda chose him and not
you…and for good reason. You
shouldn’t be so bitter. It’s…pathetic.

Derek scowls and holds on to Daniel as the boy continues to fight and flail, trying fruitlessly to free himself.

DEREK
Can’t you just stand still, boy?

DANIEL
Get your hands off me now!

As Paul tries to fight off two more enemy soldiers, he looks over and sees Derek restraining his brother. He winces as he notices how hard his little brother is fighting to get away,
to no avail.

PAUL
Hang on, brother! I’m coming!

Two more Confederates step in Paul’s way as he desperately tries to get to Daniel.

The Bermuda (Recoil 1)

COLD OPEN

FADE IN:

EXT. CHAMPION HILL’S BATTLEFIELD, MS – 1863 DAY

The sun shines beautifully in the blue, cloudy sky. An
uproarious KABOOM, KABOOM! of CANON FIRE and CRACKLE! of GUNFIRE. Dark smoke rises, hindering the sunlight.

We see UNION and CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS in the middle of a huge
battlefield, firing at each other. GUNSHOTS and SCREAMS of dying, agonized MEN in great pain fill the space. As bullets
fly through the air, their bodies fall to the bloody ground.

A LOCATION and DATE appears:

CHAMPION HILL MISSISSIPPI – 1863

PAUL GRAHAM, handsome, 30-year-old Union soldier, runs
through the active battlefield. A CONFEDERATE SOLDIER blocks his path, pointing a gun at him.

CONFEDERATE SOLDIER
Why are you running? Are you afraid to fight boy?

PAUL
I am not afraid to fight.

The Confederate soldier fires his gun, but Paul moves out of
the way, quickly pulls out his knife, and stabs the
Confederate soldier in the side. The soldier falls to the
ground and slowly bleeds out with fear in his eyes. Paul
steps over his lifeless body and walks away.

PAUL (CONT’D)
I hope you burn in hell.

Paul walks away to return to the battle, using his gun and
knife to fight off additional Confederates. As he continues
to fight valiantly, he darts his eyes around, searching the
crowd of faces, as if looking for someone.

PAUL (CONT’D)
Daniel, where are you?

Paul continues to fight and search, till a UNION SOLDIER on the ground reaches out and calls for him.

UNION SOLDIER
Paul…

Paul hurriedly walks the Union soldier out of the line of
fire. KABOOM! and CRACKLE continue to echo around them. The Union soldier falls to the ground. Paul leans toward him and notices his battle wounds bleeding profusely.

PAUL
We need to get you some help.

UNION SOLDIER
It’s too late for that, my friend.
Please…give this to…to m-my family…

The Union soldier hands Paul a chain that holds a locket.

PAUL
I will make sure they get it, but you.

The Union soldier dies, and Paul stands and looks down at him somberly.

PAUL (CONT’D)
Rest in peace, my friend.

Paul holds the locket up to look at it for a second, dangling it in front of his face, then begins to tuck the necklace into his pocket. Suddenly, ELEANOR appears next to him, dressed in a big, Southern belle dress, with layers of ruffles, and there are steampunk goggles on her head.

ELEANOR
Excuse me, sir…

PAUL
What is it, miss?

With that, Eleanor snatches the necklace out of Paul’s hand.

PAUL (CONT’D)
Hey! Come back here.

Paul turns as she runs away and disappears without a trace.

DANIEL
Paul!

Paul turns around and spots a 12-year-old drummer, his
brother, DANIEL GRAHAM, trying to avoid the line of fire.
Paul notices a man, DEREK, who is not in uniform, approaching Daniel from just a few feet away, wearing an evil smirk on his face.

PAUL
Run to me now, Daniel! Hurry!

Daniel tries to run but is stopped by Derek, who roughly grabs him by the arm.

DEREK
You’re not goin’ anywhere, kid.
Where’s your brother?
